At 2:28pm on Monday afternoon in China, a whole nation stopped everything (including cars, trains, buses, and planes) and mourned the victims of the earthquake that struck Sichuan exactly one week ago. Millions of people in China stopped for three minutes as cars, trains, and ships sounded their sirens to remember those lost in the earthquake. The Olympic Torch Relay has also been stopped for three days to allow the country to grieve for those lost in the earthquake. To date, over 34,000 have been confirmed dead and over 245,000 have been injured.
On Friday, I was with David Wei, Alibaba.com CEO, as he was being interviewed with the SF Chronicle. He commented that our 150 employees in Chengdu and Chongqing have all been accounted for, however, our 33 members in Wenchuan, the epicenter of the earthquake, have not. Within 24 hours of the news of the earthquake in China, Alibaba.com took action to help as much as possible with the relief efforts in Sichuan. If you want to help make a difference in the disaster relief effort in China, donations can be made through our website at Alibaba.com. Click here for more details.
